Saunas
Steam Enhanced Saunas
New names; better aims! Our sauna offerings have been renamed to describe their characters more vividly:
High Heat Sauna is now the High Heat Steam Sauna, and Steam Sauna is now the Steam Plus Sauna. In practice, spa users have the option to add steam to their saunas by adding small recommended amounts of water to the hot rocks. The percentage of humidity that can be increased this way depends on which steam enhanced sauna you choose and results in 25% to 55% final humidity.
High Heat Steam Sauna
This electric heated high temperature sauna is less humid; typical humidity is around 0% to 10%. By adding a small ladle of water to the sauna rocks when they are very hot, the steam created can boost the humidity to 25% level.
Steam Plus Sauna
This gas heated sauna is medium high in temperature and more humid naturally. Using the same method described above, it can achieve up to 55% humidity!
Notes
Please be advised that these are classic saunas, not to be confused with steam rooms which are lower in temperature and have steam piped into the rooms at or near 100% humidity. This can make it feel hotter than it is as the extreme humidity prevents sweating. Hastings Spa does not offer steam rooms.

*Recent studies have shown that the higher temperatures in steam or high heat saunas effectively eliminated SARS-CoV-2 viruses over a period of time. Conversely, the lower temperatures found in steam baths or steam rooms were not effective. The lower temperatures and high humidity also increased the risk of transmission.
According to LA times Study, ‘Men who take frequent saunas live longer, study shows’. Why that is remains elusive but it most certainly applies to women as well. There are many other benefits to using high heat or steam saunas regularly. You can also check them out our sauna health benefits page for more interesting facts.
